Season in review: 1986-87

A poor season with the team avoiding relegation and finishing in 14th place in the league.

Ferenc Kovacs finished his second stint in charge of Vidi at the end of the previous season. Jozsef Tajti replaced him in the hot seat.

There was major change to the playing squad with key players departing the football club. There were also replacements that arrived. Zoltan Nemeth was signed from Sopron, Imre Kanyok came in from Ozd together with midfielder Zsolt Mariasi. Csepel forward Ferenc Kovacs moved to Szekesfehervar and another forward in the form of Gyula Jonas switched from Salgotarjan. Zsolt Molnar and Andras Czuczu moved up from the youth team.

Departures included key players like midfielder Tamas Csrepka to Kaposvar, defender Jozsef Csuhaj to Honved, defender Gyula Vaszil switched over to Ferencvaros. Forward Gyorgy Kerekes moved over to Austrian club ASK Wilhelmsburg.

Intertoto cup during the summer

Videoton again participated in the summer Intertoto cup. They were drawn together with FC Malmö, Górnik Zabrze and Rosenborg. There were four wins and two draws to finish in second place in the group.

8th place finish over the autumn

The new season started with defeat at the home of Dunaujvaros. Vidi went down 2-0 in that game and it was a sign of things to come. There were some good wins scattered throughout the first half of the season. Those included a 3-0 win over Haladas with Salloi scoring a brace and Wittmann hitting the other. DMVSC were also beaten 4-2.

Vidi faced their rivals in the final 3 games of the autumn. A Csucsanszky goal earned a 1-1 draw away at Győr, and Vidi also beat Honved 2-0 at home. Csucsanszky and Novath scored the goals in that game. The final match before the winter break resulted in a 1-0 defeat at the home of Ferencvaros.

Vidi closed the autumn in 8th place with 14 points coming from 6 wins, 2 draws and 7 defeats.

A terrible spring

There was good news following the poor autumn performances with the return from Greece of forward Jozsef Szabo. Spring began with a 1-1 draw with Dunaujvaros. The continuation did not go too well with a 4-1 loss at Debrecen and a 2-0 loss away at Vasas. The first win only came in week 26 with a Szabo goal earning a 1-0 win over Pecs. That was to be the only win in the spring season.

The final four games resulted in three defeats against Ujpest Dozsa 2-1, Raba ETO 3-2 and a 5-0 beating at the hands of Budapest Honved. Ferencvaros were the visitors in the final league game of a disappointing season. Vidi took a 3rd minute lead through Szabo. Ferencvaros levelled after 77 minutes to come away with a point in the 1-1 draw. Jozsef Szabo scored his 111th goal for Videoton and that was to be his final goal in the colours of Videoton.

The poor spring saw the team end up in 14th place with 23 points coming from 7 wins, 9 draws and 14 defeats. They only just avoided the drop to the second division.

MNK cup - fourth round exit

There was a good run in the MNK Cup with a first round 4-0 win over Peremarton. Kaposgepet were defeated 3-0 and Vac also by a 1-0 scoreline. That earned Vidi a place in the final 16 and another 1-0 win over Honved. Vidi were drawn with Pecs and the first leg away from home ended in a 1-0 loss. The second leg at the Sostoi finished all square. Vidi were knocked out of the cup.
