Club History

Foundation and the '40s

 1941 
The club is formed, and is named Szekesfehervar Hunters Cartridge Factory SK. The club decide on the colours of the town, which are red and blue.

 1942 

On the 21st November, the club is officially founded at a special meeting. The founding deeds list the club’s name as: Szekesfehervar MOVE Hunters Cartridge Factory sport and cultural club. VSK, in short, enter the county championship in the 1942-43 season. Their first game is against Mori Miners, which they win 6-4.

The 1950's and 60's

 1955 
The Hungarian National team, who at that time were the best team in the world, play a game against the club. Hungary win the game 20-0 with their goals coming from Kocsis (5), Csordás (4), Tichy (3), Sándor (3), Hidegkuti (2), Puskás, Szimcsák, and Palotás

 1957 

The club play in the second division for the first time. The first game is against Veszprem, which VSK win 2-1. The club’s first goal came from Imre Derfalvi, who later went on to become a famous sports presenter. 

 1962 
The 1961-62 season sees the club achieve its best finish yet, ending up third in the second division. They only just miss out on promotion to the first division. The club changes its name at the end of this season, to VT Vasas. They would go on to use this name in the first division in the coming years

The new Sostoi Stadium opens its doors

 1967 
The opening ceremony of the Sostoi Stadium takes place on September 20th, when VT Vasas play Rot Weiss Erfurt, of East Germany, with the visitors winning 3-2. A massive success happens at the end of this season, as Videoton, after changing its name once more, get promoted to the first division, after finishing second. 

 1968    A club meeting takes place on January 22nd, when it is decided that the club should be known as Videoton SC. The club suffers a 6-1 defeat to Budapest Vasas, within a month of that meeting, in a first division match. The club’s first division one goal is scored by Laszlo Csukovics.

1978  The club achieve one of its best championship finishes, as they finish runners up in the first division. Many fans still remember how referee Muncz, took away top spot, with his performance at Ferencvaros’ Ulloi Street stadium.

The Golden Era

 1985 
Videoton achieve a fantastic result in the UEFA Cup, when they beat Real Madrid at the Bernabeu Stadium, with Majer scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win. Real clinch the trophy with their 3-0 win in Hungary in the first leg, but this went down as one of Hungarian football’s best nights, with the club finishing runners up in the cup.


 1989  

The 1988-89 season sees the side produce a great team, and end up being one of Videoton’s strongest ever teams, under the guidance of manager Gabor Kaszas. Vidi end the season in 4th place, but if the 3 points for a win system, which was only introduced the following season, had been in operation, that may have meant the title for the Club.

 2006 
FC Fehervar win the Hungarian Cup.

The New Promising Era

 2007 
The club are on the brink of virtual bankruptcy within a year and a half of the cup win. They lose their division one license. Istvan Garancsi comes to the rescue, paying off the large debts that had built up. Vidi continue to take part in the league campaign of 2008.

The first League Cup Success

 2008 
The first stop under the new regime sees FC Fehervar win the League Cup

 

 2009 

The club wins the League Cup for the second year running. Perhaps the biggest success under the leadership of Garancsi, is that the club is once again known as Videoton.

 2010 
Videoton FC achieves its best league finish for 34 years, as they finish runners up in the Soproni League. That takes them into Europe to compete in the Europa league. Vidi led the table for long periods, but it was Debrecen who took the title following an exciting end to the season. The European adventure ends at the first stage as Slovenian side NK Maribor beat Videoton over two legs. 

Videoton FC win the Hungarian Championship

 2011 
CHAMPIONS!
Vidi finish top of the league for the first time in the clubs history. They do this by ending up in top place by several points! It was a confident performance on the domestic front, and Vidi qualify for the Champions League. They could have made it a league and cup double, but Kecskemet lifted the Hungarian cup. Vidi emerge winners in the Super Cup final with a win over Kecskemet. This is the first success for new manager Paulo Sousa, who begins his reign at Videoton with a win.

Europa League Group Stage

 2012 
Vidi pick up the Super Cup for the second season running with a win over Debrecen in the final. However, the real success is just about to happen as the red and blues go on an unforgettable adventure in the Europa League. Wins in the qualification stage over Slovan, Gent, Trabzonspor mean that Vidi qualify for the Europa League group stage. The group stage puts Vidi in the same group as Portuguese side Sporting, Swiss club Basel and Belgium team Genk. Videoton complete the group stage with 6 points to their name thanks to two memorable wins at the Sostoi stadium over Sporting and Basel. It is a proud end to a great run in Europe. Vidi win the League Cup for the third time. They finish runner up in the championship. The 66 points picked up in the league was the highest in the club’s history.

  2013. 
Videoton finish second in the domestic league under the management of José Gomes. Plans are drawn up to redevelop the Sostoi stadium to make it a modern stadium with the latest features. Videoton make it to the League cup final, but lose to Ferencvaros.

  2015.
Videoton win their second ever league title under Spanish manager Joan Carrillo. An impressive season sees them also make it to the Hungarian cup final. Work on demolishing the Sostoi stadium begins at the end of the year with a new modern stadium being built on the same site.

  2016. 
Videoton end the 2015/2016 with a second place finish that secures them Europa League football. The stadium project continues with the stands, old scoreboard and floodlights being removed to make way for the new stadium to take shape.
